Summer is here! It’s my favorite season. Why? Because everything slows down and speeds up at the same time. The days are longer and the doors stay open. Popsicles and ice cream. Good vibes to be had all around!

And your home should know it That’s why I’m kicking off a whole summer decorating series where we'll dig into tons of details.

But first, let's focus on the big picture. That way you can see how to pull it all together without spending a fortune or losing a weekend.

Summer Decor vs. Spring Decor

This is a question worth answering before you start pulling things off shelves.

To me, spring decor is full of newness that only spring brings. It's pretty pastels, but it's also a little delicate.

If spring is more, "things are waking up," then summer is "we're fully alive and it’s time to relax!”

Where spring might give you pinks and lavenders, summer brings in whites, warm yellows, punchy coral, and ocean blue. Where spring is a cardigan, summer is a linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up. Woohoo!

The other big difference is that summer decor tends to emphasize outdoor living. Yes patio, I’m talking to you!

The Main Areas to Focus On

I don’t think you need to redo your entire house. Instead, I’d recommend focusing on these areas for the biggest impact with the least amount of effort.

The Entryway

Your entryway sets the tone for everything else. When you walk in and it feels like summer, your whole house gets the memo. A bright welcome mat, a vase of bright flowers, a light linen wreath on the door.

You can pull off a quick refresh here in about 15 minutes and it will make a difference every time you come home.

The Kitchen

The kitchen is one of the easiest rooms to update for summer because so much of it is already on the counter. A fruit bowl with lemons and peaches. Fresh herbs on the windowsill. Light linen dish towels swapped in for heavier ones. Colorful glassware pulled out from the back of the cabinet.

These little tweaks brighten up your kitchen and make it inviting even on the hottest days. Did someone say lemonade?

The Living Room

This is the room where people gather, which means it's worth putting a little extra thought into. The good news is that the living room responds really well to fabric swaps and color pops. New pillow covers, a lighter throw, sheer curtains instead of heavy drapes, and a few flowers can completely transform the room.

The Bedroom

The bedroom summer reset is all about comfort. Lighter bedding, fewer things on the nightstand, etc. Summer is the time to pare back.

The Dining Room

You might be getting ready to host a barbecue. Or perhaps you’re just prepping everyday dinners and want something a little more special. Either way, your dining room deserves a summer refresh! You can get it done with light linen napkins, adding in a simple flower centerpiece, or using colorful place settings.

Outdoor Spaces

Summer means it’s time to head outside! Sure, you might not have the largest backyard. But any patio, porch, balcony, even a small fire escape can become a real living space with the right approach. Add in outdoor rugs, string lights, throw pillows, or even a container garden. Any excuse to enjoy the warm summer air!

Low-Effort Swaps for ASAP Results

If you don't want to go through my full series because you’re oh so itching to get started, here are some fast, low-effort changes you can start with.

Swap out those materials. Heavy curtains, chunky throws, and dark pillow covers are simple things to swap. Replace them with lighter, breezier versions and watch your rooms open up.

Bring in real flowers. If you’ve been around my blog for a while, you’ll know I like to talk about flowers! One bunch of sunflowers or a simple summer bouquet will do.

Open up your windows and let the light in. Natural light is free, it's flattering, and it's the best decor you have. If you've been blocking it out with heavy window treatments, this is the most important change you can make.

Add a splash summer color. I’m not saying you need to repaint anything. You can bring in color with a few new throw pillows, a bright vase, a colorful bowl on the counter. Pick one room and add one pop of summer color. Don’t like it? Easy-peasy to switch it up!

Declutter one surface. I’m always in favor of relaxing in the summer. But I think it’s harder to do when there’s clutter everywhere. Take some time to clear off a coffee table, a kitchen counter, or a dresser top and style it simply with one or two summer elements.
