If your shelves have ever looked like a holding zone for random objects with nowhere else to go, I won’t hold it against you.
A vignette is the fix. I like to think of it as the difference between a shelf that holds things and a shelf that says something. It's one of my favorite ways to style an empty area because the rules are super simple. And more than likely you can do it with things you already own.
Want to know how to make your very own vignette? Let’s find out how!
What’s a Vignette?
First things first. What’s a vignette? The actual word is French for “little vine” but it’s often used in English to stand for “decorative design.”
Really, a vignette is a small grouping of decorative objects. It serves two purposes: to create an eye-catching interest, and to showcase your favorite treasures.
No, it’s NOT the clutter that’s sitting on your end table. Nor is it the random stuff placed in the forgotten corner of your living room.
The idea is so that it looks like it was designed to be there. See the difference?
Where Should You Put One?
Pretty much anywhere there's a flat surface! You can make a vignette on top of a dresser, table, bookshelf, countertop, or window ledge.
Some of the most popular spots are your entryway console, coffee table, bathroom vanity, fireplace mantel, and bedroom dresser.
And what’s so great about creating a vignette is that you can get it done right in the midst of a jam-packed schedule.
No whole weekend needed! Just a bit of time and some items that you likely already have.
Start With Your Base
I like the vignette styling trick of starting with a base. That might be a tray or a stack of books.
Placing smaller home decor on a base makes the styled arrangement seem as though the items all belong there.
Otherwise, it can end up appearing as though you've just randomly grouped a few items together. Not what we want!
A simple round tray from your kitchen? Perfect! A stack of pretty coffee table books? Also perfect.
Your base is anything that gives your vignette a “home.”
Three's Company (Five's Even Better)
Items grouped in threes or in odd numbers are more appealing to the eye. It's actually a design principle! It draws the eye in, and you'll find it often in interior design and even photography.
Work in odd numbers. But try not to over-clutter your arrangement! Using 3–5 (maybe even 7) home accessories is a good rule of thumb.
More than that and your vignette might start to look like you’re getting ready for a yard sale. Yikes!
Have Some Fun with Height
I want you to think of setting up your vignette as you'd set a decorative table. It’ll be more exciting if you use objects with different heights than if everything is at the same level.
Choose one item to be the tallest and work down from there, like in a triangular shape.
The tallest piece acts as your anchor. Since the anchor piece is often the tallest item in a vignette, you'll want to place it slightly further back if possible. Some examples might be a lamp, a tall vase, a piece of art leaning against the wall.
Don’t have items that vary in height? No worries! Here are some tricks to get around that.
Stack books underneath smaller pieces. Or use pedestals to elevate items. Or even try stacking books to create a platform for smaller objects.
The More Materials the Merrier
Now it’s time for some variety. Wood next to metal, a linen piece near something shiny or marble. The more variety, the more alive the whole thing looks.
If all the decor is the same material, your arrangement can appear flat. Or worse, if everything is glass or metal, it can appear cold and hard. You want warm + cool, rough + smooth, shiny + matte.
And my personal preference is to add something living. A bit of vegetation adds life to any vignette (literally).
You don’t have to grow a garden, a simple fern or vase of flowers or a potted succulent will do it. Not ready for a real plant? The opt for dried pampas grass or any high quality silk stem.
Not Someone Else’s Vignette
You could probably go to a fancy hotel lobby and find several vignettes that are all fabulous. That’s great! But they’re not yours.
I think that vignettes in your home should feel a little personal because it tells a story about you and your home. It’s a reflection of your style and personality.
Instead of a generic bowl, place that trinket you got on your last vacation. Use the candle that has your favorite scent. The quirky piece you inherited from your grandma.
People love to notice something unique. That’s why these are the kinds of objects that lead to great conversation and give your vignette some personal charm.
The Edit Is Everything
Once you've got your pieces together, step back and take it all in. I like to call this “the edit.” Feel free to furrow your eyebrows while you’re assessing. That’s how you know you’re doing it right!
Is it too busy? Too bland? Should the items be clustered closer together or further apart? Is anything jarring or sticking out for the wrong reasons?
When in doubt, take one thing away. Less is almost always more when it comes to clearing out too much clutter.
