Before he arrives, before you hold him for the first time, before you know what makes him laugh or how he likes to be rocked to sleep, it’s time to think about his room.
Designing a nursery for your baby boy is one of those beautiful, sometimes overwhelming parts of preparing for parenthood. There’s tons of choices to make, but there's no single "right" way to do this.
Social media is a rabbit hole, baby stores are sensory overload, and suddenly everyone has opinions about what you have to have.
Not sure where to begin? That’s why I created a fairly simple guide to walk you through each step, from nailing down your vision to adding those finishing touches.
1. Start With a Vision
Here's where most people trip up. They start with blue and try to build a room around it. But a color isn't a concept.
Before you even glance at a paint swatch, ask yourself: what mood do I want to walk into every single day?
Think about it…
- Calm and grounded? Pick earthy tones, natural wood, and linens.
- Fun and lots of energy? Bring in bold patterns, graphic prints, and colors that make you smile.
- Sleek and modern? Think clean lines, monochromatic hues, and simplicity.
- Rustic and adventurous? Use woods, leathers, vintage finds, and an outdoorsy spirit.
Once you have that overall vision, then every other choice comes more easily.
2. Now We Can Talk Color
Look, blue is a classic for good reason. It's versatile and works with just about everything. But if you think blue is your only option, think again. Here's some inspiration to get your wheels turning.
- Cool & Calm: Soft blue, warm gray, seafoam, cream, white
- Earthy & Warm: Cognac, camel, olive green, rust, walnut brown
- Bold & Graphic: Navy, charcoal, mustard yellow, forest green, burnt orange
- Classic & Refined: Navy blue, crisp white, tan, with brass or leather accents
- Minimal & Modern: Black, white, warm wood tones, with a single pop of color
TIP: Stick to a 3-4 colors. Choose one dominant color for walls and large furniture, a secondary color for smaller pieces, and one or two accent colors for artwork and accessories.
3. The Furniture You Need…Skip the Rest
Baby brands will try to convince you that you need a million things. Spoiler: you don't. Here's the real essentials list.
The Crib
Your anchor piece. Prioritize safety and quality first…then find a style that fits your vision. Convertible cribs are smart investments since they’ll grow with him.
White and natural wood are popular choices, but a deep espresso, matte black, or even a weathered gray can make a statement.
A Chair You Want to Sit In
Late-night feeds are no joke. You’re going to need a chair that supports your back. A glider or rocker with cushioned arms is ideal. Leather or performance fabric can also be good for easy cleanup.
Things will get messy!
Dresser That’s Also a Changing Station
Forget the dedicated changing table, it becomes useless way too fast. A solid dresser with a changing pad on top gives you storage AND function. Two birds, one piece of furniture.
Smart Storage Solutions
Tiny human, massive amount of gear. He’ll need less as he gets older! But for now, I’d recommend woven baskets, open shelving, drawer dividers, closet systems. Invest in organization now and thank yourself later.
4. Walls That Tell a Story
Your walls are the backdrop for everything. Let's spruce them up!
Paint
The easiest and most affordable route. A warm white or soft greige keeps things flexible if you like to switch up decor. Want more drama? Try a moody accent wall in deep hunter green, slate blue, or charcoal behind the crib.
Wallpaper
I don’t mean ugly wallpaper from the 70s. You have so many stylish options to choose from these days. Vintage maps, mountain ranges, wild animals, constellations, retro airplanes, or bold geometric designs. And peel-and-stick options mean zero commitment if you change your mind or move.
TIP: One accent wall is all you need, it creates major impact for the entire room without overwhelming the space.
Wall Decor That Adds Character
This is where personality comes in:
- A bold wooden name sign or initial
- Floating shelves styled with books, plants, and family keepsakes
- A gallery wall with prints, photos, and maybe a pennant or two
- Wooden animals, vintage toys, or hanging shelves
- A woven wall hanging or tapestry for texture
5. Lighting That Works Day and Night
Lighting sets the entire mood, and it's often an afterthought. Don't let that happen to you.
Overhead Lighting
Ditch the boring builder-grade fixture. Swap in a cool pendant, a simple drum shade, or even a vintage-inspired industrial light. It's an simple upgrade that makes a nice difference.
Task Lighting
You'll need a lamp near your chair for nighttime feeds. Go for something with a dimmer or a soft glow so you're not blasting bright light in the middle of the nights.
Ambient Lighting
A simple nightlight, LED strips tucked behind a shelf, or a warm-toned lamp.
6. The Soft Stuff: How to Make His Room Extra Snuggly
This is what transforms it from being a room into a space you want to spend time in.
Rugs
A plush area rug gives you a soft spot for floor play. Look for something durable and easy to clean (because…babies). You can also add a smaller textured rug over a larger neutral one for added depth.
Curtains
I think blackout curtains are worth the investment. Babies sleep better in the dark, and so will you during nap time. They come in tons of great colors and patterns now, so you don't have to sacrifice style.
Bedding & Blankets
Please keep the crib safe and simple. Fitted sheet only, absolutely no loose blankets or pillows!
But go ahead and add comfy throw blankets on your chair and add some cute pillows to a reading corner. That's where you get to have fun.
7. The Details That Seal the Deal
Time for the good stuff. The pieces that turn this room into your baby boy's room.
- Books: Line a shelf with board books. The colorful spines double as decor, and reading time starts early!
- Plants: A few low-maintenance plants (real or fake) add life and freshness. Just keep real ones up high and make sure they're non-toxic.
- Meaningful pieces: Framed ultrasound photos, a family heirloom, a handmade gift from a loved one, these are the details that are irreplaceable.
- Everyday items that look good: A leather storage bin, a handsome laundry basket, a vintage-style clock.
